Description
Artery forceps have a scissor-like appearance but are not used for cutting. Their design features are specifically adapted for clamping:
- Jaws: The working ends are designed to clamp down on vessels or tissues. They can be straight or curved and often feature serrations (grooves) on the inner surfaces to provide a secure, non-slip grip that minimizes tissue damage. Some types, like the Kocher forceps, have interlocking teeth at the tips for grasping tougher tissues.
- Ratchet Mechanism (Lock): A key feature is a self-retaining locking mechanism (ratchet) that engages when the handles are squeezed together. This allows the surgeon to apply constant pressure to the clamped vessel without continuous manual force, freeing their hands for other tasks.
- Handles: The handles typically have finger rings (loops) for ergonomic control and manipulation, similar to a pair of scissors.
- Shaft: The length of the shaft varies, with longer instruments designed to access deeper surgical sites.
Common Types
Different types of artery forceps are tailored for specific applications:
- Halsted-Mosquito Forceps: Small and fine-tipped, used for clamping small blood vessels and delicate tissues in minor or pediatric surgeries.
- Kelly Forceps & Crile Forceps: Medium-sized, general-purpose forceps used for larger vessels and tissues. Kelly forceps have serrations covering a shorter portion of the jaw, while Crile forceps have serrations running the full length of the jaw.
- Spencer Wells Forceps: Widely used in general surgery, available in both straight and curved forms for reliable hemostasis.
- Kocher Forceps: Feature strong, transverse serrations and interlocking teeth at the tip, used for a firm grip on tough tissues or large arteries, often in orthopedic or vascular surgeries.
General Specifications
While specifications vary by type and manufacturer, general characteristics include:
- Material: High-grade, surgical-quality stainless steel (e.g., martensitic steel, 420 or 440 grade) for durability and corrosion resistance.
- Finish: Often a satin or matte finish to minimize glare under operating room lights.
- Length: Highly variable, from small 10 cm (4 in) Mosquito forceps to long 24 cm (9.5 in) Pean or Crafoord forceps, to suit different surgical depths.
- Jaw Profile: Available as straight or curved.
- Reusability: Most are reusable and designed to be fully sterilizable via autoclaving to meet hygiene and safety standards.
- Compliance: Manufactured according to international standards such as ISO 7153-1 and ISO 13402.

Shipping & Return

You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
You should expect to receive your refund within four weeks of giving your package to the return shipper, however, in many cases you will receive a refund more quickly. This time period includes the transit time for us to receive your return from the shipper (5 to 10 business days), the time it takes us to process your return once we receive it (3 to 5 business days), and the time it takes your bank to process our refund request (5 to 10 business days).
If you need to return an item, simply login to your account, view the order using the "Complete Orders" link under the My Account menu and click the Return Item(s) button. We'll notify you via e-mail of your refund once we've received and processed the returned item.
Shipping
We can ship to virtually any address in the world. Note that there are restrictions on some products, and some products cannot be shipped to international destinations.
When you place an order, we will estimate shipping and delivery dates for you based on the availability of your items and the shipping options you choose. Depending on the shipping provider you choose, shipping date estimates may appear on the shipping quotes page.
Please also note that the shipping rates for many items we sell are weight-based. The weight of any such item can be found on its detail page. To reflect the policies of the shipping companies we use, all weights will be rounded up to the next full pound.
